Atlanta sweeps Pittsburgh and it was anything but a lopsided series.
Game 1 – Atlanta 2 Pittsburgh 0
Greg Maddux was masterful as he threw a complete game 2 hit shutout. The
only hits he gave up where ground ball singles to Roberto Clemente and Gene
Alley. Steve Blass was matching him pitch for pitch until the 7th inning when
Ryan Klesko and David Justice hit solo home runs.
Game 2 – Atlanta 1 Pittsburgh 0
Atlanta shut out string reached 18 innings as Tom Glavine extended his
personal scoreless string to 31 innings. He went 7 innings with 2 hits. 4 walks
didn’t allow him to finish the game but 3 Atlanta pitchers completed the shut
out including Craig Kimbrel’s 15th save. A solo home run in the 4th by Andruw
Jones, his league leading 16th, was the only run allowed by tough luck loser
Vern Law. The Pirates could only muster 3 hits in game 2 and now have 5 for the
series.
In a thriller where both teams had multiple chance to put this game away,
the Braves pushed the go ahead run across the plate on back to back doubles by
Matt Diaz and Marcus Giles. Al McBean, who had been tough all year took the
loss. Craig Kimbrel stuck out the side in the bottom of the 11th for his
16th save.
(submitted by Ron Burnette) Fantastic series and well played games. Thanks to Bill Schneider for a
nerve racking time
