ALWC Game - "Jack of all Trades"

Memorial Stadium
Detroit at Baltimore
Morris vs Cuellar
Detroit 4 Baltimore 2

Another exciting game in the AL playoffs finds Detroit coming into Charm City and shutting down the Baltimore offense.  Big game pitcher Jack Morris would throw a complete game 5 hitter while Mike Cuellar battled him tough through 5 1/3 on short rest.

Through 5 complete innings the pitching dominated as the game remained 0-0 while Morris and Cuellar spun gold from the mound.  In the top of the 6th, Cuellar walked Cecil Fielder followed by Mickey Tettleton and Lou Whitaker singles.  Fielder tried to score the games first run on Whitakers hit, but was thrown out at home on a close play by Frank Robinson. After and intentional walk to Steve Kemp, Dick Hall came on in relief for Baltimore yielding a single to Chet Lemon which scored 2 before he could close out the inning.

In the eighth Detroit added 2 more runs to provide Morris with more than enough cushion for the win.  Baltimore finally broke through with 2 int he 8th before Morris escaped by emticing Ken Singleton to ground out with the bases loaded.

Morris closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, the last two being strikouts.

An excellent playoff game.

Congratulations to Detroit and good luck the rest of the way.
